Port to Rome to Ostia Antica

We have one full day in between our Eastern and Mediterranean cruises and would like to go to Ostia Antica. The train from Rome to Ostia has been recommended as the best/cheapest way to go. I'd like your opinion on two options:

  1. Take transportation (train or shuttle) to a hotel near the Ostiense Rail Station after we disembark cruise #1. Hop on train from Ostiense to Ostia and return to hotel that evening. Return on train to port the next morning for cruise #2.

  2. Take a taxi to Ostia and stay in a hotel there. Arrange a taxi to and from Ostia Antica. Taxi back to port the next morning for cruise #2.

I really appreciate any opinions on these two strategies and also hotels near Ostiense and Ostia.

Thanks.

Both work. No 2 will be several hundred euro more expensive as the distance between Civit... and OA is a couple of hours.

If I was doing it I would take the train from Civitavecchia to Termini (Rome). Stay in a hotel around Termini (Sonya, Aberdeen). Drop your luggage and take metro and train to OA. OA at best is a three, four hour visit. Spent the rest of the morning and afternoon in OA. Return to your Rome hotel, spend the evening in Rome (there is absolutely nothing around OA) and train back to Civit... the next afternoon for your second cruise. And also there is nothing around Ostiense Rail station. Calling it a rail station is a bit of hype. It is just a metro stop. There is nothing there. You need to look at a map of Rome to get a better understanding of what you are trying to do.

PS On further reflection -- No 1 doesn't make any sense.

Thanks so much, Frank. I've stayed at Hotel Sonya, so that is easy. Port to Termini to Sonya, Termini to OA and back. Thanks!
