Has anyone rented a car at the port of Civitavecchia (north west of Rome)? I understand that it is quite far from a train station. Also, would it be better to drop off a car in Siena and take the train to Florence rather than trying to drop off in Florence. It seems like a car is necessary to see many of the Tuscany/Umbria hill towns.

You are correct. There is no car rental near the cruise docks or the train station. There will be plenty of cabs are the port entrance to take you there. You might check a google or mapquest for confirmation of location and make sure you have a price agreement with the cab before getting in.
