Pope's Schedule?

I know I'm jumping the gun here, but we really want to see Pope Francis when we're in Rome next year. I'm an observant Catholic, but even my non-observant anything husband wants to see Francis.

Papal audiences are Wednesday mornings; our Best of South Italy tour leaves Rome early on a Wednesday. We could juggle our final week - which would be several weeks later - to be in Rome on a Wednesday morning. But if he's not going to be in town, we have other things we'd rather do.

I do see that he also comes out on Sundays for the Angelus at noon; that's doable the day before our RS tour starts. But how early will his schedule be posted?

Thanks for your help. This is important to us.

The schedule for 2019 wasn’t posted until late in 2018. Avoid August as this is usually his summer holiday. We are looking forward to seeing him on Sept 11th! The American Church in Rome is a good resource-St. Patrick’s.

We went to the Wednesday Papal audience in Oct 2017 - my sister, brother-in-law, and myself are not Catholic but really wanted to see Pope Francis. We arrived early, about 7:00, security didn't take very long and we were able to get decent seats. We had tried for 7 months to get tickets but had no response, so we just showed up. The Vatican website says "first come, first served" and they didn't ask for tickets anyway. I hope you can make it work - it is a wonderfully moving experience - and we were able to get good photos of him! Get a seat near the outer edge if possible. Good luck.

Thanks, Sarah C. I saw Pope Benedict XVI years ago - 2010, I think - at a papal audience, and it was wonderful. And many many years ago my husband and I were blessed (that's how we felt) to see Pope John Paul II when he visited Poland. He celebrated an outdoor Mass, and when I say we "saw" him --- we saw this tiny white figure way in the distance, as we were far back in the crowd. But it was wonderful.

When I went to the audience with Pope Benedict, we were on a RS Best of Rome tour, and our guide scored tickets. My husband wasn't interested that time, so one of our tour mates went with me. He was an investment banker from Florida, a Baptist, and it was his first trip to Europe. He was just gobsmacked at the audience. He was absolutely transfixed.

I must say that traveling with him was a wonderful experience. He loved everything about Rome, and we all fed off his enthusiasm.

Jane, if I could live in a city, it would be Rome - I've been 3 times and love it - can't wait to return one day.

Sarah C, the first time we went to Rome, I didn't like it. Too big, too noisy, too confusing, and I got lost at least once a day.

The second time we were there, I was more comfortable, and began to relax and appreciate some of the city's charms. By the third time we went, I was hooked.

We're planning to go at least three, maybe four days early for our South Italy tour so that we have extra time to explore the city.

Angelus on Sundays is always around 11 am, but be there about half an hour before.

Thanks, francoise. That's probably the way we'll go.

Whoop! I just checked the Pope's schedule, and he will be in town for the Angelus on the Sunday before our RS South Italy tour begins. Yes! We will be there, probably along with about 10,000 of our closest friends.

The schedule posted on the website http://www.vatican.va/various/prefettura/en/udienze_en.html shows the event beginning at noon, but some folks here have said it starts at 11:00. I suspect we'll head over to the Vatican right after church or breakfast that morning.

This is the icing on the cake (or should I say, le ciliege sulla torta) for us. So exciting!

Thanks for your help with this issue. I love this Forum.

It is always better to go earlier than expected to stake out your spot. If you end up going to the Papal audience it is best to grab a chair and get a spot by the railing as when he drives around it is by the railing. Corners are always better because he seems to stop there to kiss babies.
