In early June and after 2 weeks in Switzerland, we are thinking of going from Pontresina via Bernina Express to Tirano then train to Varenna and spend 3 or 4 nights. Then we will go go Milan, spend 2 nights and fly home. I have 2 to 3 nights to spare, is there any way I can fit in CT via train? Where would be the logical base in CT?
Thank you for your suggestions in advance.
It is 3 to 4 hours down to the Cinque Terre villages from Milan, depending on the connections and your destination. Well worth the time, if you can spend at least 2 nights (3 would be better). AS for where to stay, everyone has their favorite village. Ours in Manarola; you will get as many or more votes for Vernazza (which we found way too crowded) and Monterosso (a larger village with more shops and restaurants, less local "small town" feel.)
craig, If you have 3 nights to spare, you could certainly spend a few days in the Cinque Terre. You'll travel from Varenna to Milano Centrale (1H:03M) and then connect to the trains to the C.T. Travel time will be 3-4 hours, depending on which train you choose and which town you'll be staying in. As Lola mentioned, each of us have our favourite towns, and my preference is Monterosso. It's the largest of the five and therefore has the greatest number of hotels, restaurants and other facilities. However, there is one concern. For travel in early June, it may be difficult finding accommodations. I often start booking in February for travel in September, and even that early it's often a challenge. I'd suggest getting something booked SOON! This list will provide website for many of the places in Monterosso: http://www.rebuildmonterosso.com/p/visitors-information.html If you can't find anyplace there, you could check the other four towns (do you have the Italy Guidebook?). Happy travels!
