I am traveling Italy with just the Rick Steve's backpack. I want to visit Pompeii on my way from Sorrento to Rome. Is it feasible to do the Pompeii tour with a backpack?

If you prefer to carry it that won't be a problem. I carried mine the whole day.

Ok, I was wondering about that. Thanks for the info. How was your trip using just the backpack? I'm getting a lot of mixed feelings about traveling like this. A friend said the pickpockets love backpacks...?

Me and my wife are in the sixties. We only use backpacks when we travel oversea. We use public transportation.(bus and train), so backpacks will be easy to get on and off. Most public transportation in the cities do not have room for the luggage. In Europe, the airlines only allow 19 lbs. carry on. As for the pickpockets, I use money belt and I do not put any valuable stuff in the backpacks.
