Pompeii Visit Questions

Hello
We travel to Pompeii in several weeks and as I look at the official website with bag restrictions I have questions for those of you that have traveled before me. Are you allowed to bring in food and water? If a bag is 5cm over height will it have to be checked? And last but most important would we need to purchase tickets in advance with the visit being the 1st part of April? Yes, it is my first trip to Italy.
Thank you

We went in July and bought tickets when we arrived. We also booked a guided tour which I would strongly recommend.

We only had back packs with water so don’t know about your other questions.

There is a place that sells food and drink there. We bought lunch there after our tour and then wandered around another couple hours on our own.

No food. Water bottles only. You might get by with a candy bar but no picnic lunches. Our day bags are pretty small so that issue never came up but we generally have found in other places that the bag limited is frequently enforced.

Is your bag soft and collapsible, or really rigid in its dimensions, or over-stuffed?

The bag is rigid, with some flexibility. Not over stuffed by any means, actually fairly flat with the size of 35 x26 x 11 cm.

That is not a small bag. I would plan on checking. You might slip by but plan otherwise.

I might add, I have not seen any picnickers eating lunch in the scavi, so suspect it is not encouraged. Water is a different matter altogether.

My husband had no trouble getting in with a backpack dedicated to camera gear - it was 17" tall by 11" wide by 6" deep. No food in there.

There was no line at 10am on the day we were there in Feb. for those with tickets purchased online (or the Arte Card - same line) and a moderate line to buy tickets. April can only be busier.

We had no problem with a day pack. Nobody wanted to see it.
