Pompeii/Vesuvius/Herculaneum in one day?

When staying in Sorrento as a base, is it reasonable to visit Pompeii, Vesuvius and Herculaneum in one day or is this a “bridge too far” and we should drop Herculaneum. We don’t want to rush through these sites. Thank you.

If you don't want to rush, then its too much. It took us almost a whole day to visit Pompeii, not including any walk to/up to Vesuvius. This past February, we visited Herculaneum on a day trip from Naples. We spent much of a day there.

Touring Pompeii alone takes four to six hours and Herculaneum and Vesuvias takes about two to three hours each. Plus, you need to allow time to travel between the three places from and to Sorrento.

In summer I’d say no because it’s just too hot. If you have the time, it’ll be better to do Pompeii in one go (it’s huge). Herculaneum is often paired with Vesuvius, if you really want to see it up close. For me, seeing it looming in the background was sufficient.

In 2022, my brother and I visited Pompeii after taking an early quick train from Rome to Naples and then a bus the 20 miles to Pompeii. Though I was at Pompeii for about three to four hours, I didn't feel it was enough. It's such a fascinating site that I would have liked to have lingered. Maybe you will react the same way? Also, I had thought about visiting the Naples Archeological Museum, because virtually all the artifacts recovered from Pompeii are in the museum. Instead, we opted for pizza at what reputedly is the world's oldest pizzeria in Naples. Later, I wished I had gone to the museum. The museum is not on your list, and maybe you'll feel the site is enough, but the museum visit might enrich your visit.

Thanks all. We'll plan to cut Herculaneum and focus on Pompeii.
@Craig. Yes, we are planning to visit the archeology museum in Naples the day before we visit Pompeii.
