Pompeii versus Capri

My family of 10 will be in Naples for a Day.

Could you give cost, time and directions for the train to Pompeii.

Are there tour guides you can hire outside if we would like a private tour: how much are they.
How do we get the the National Museum in Naples. Is it worth out time.
Half of the family would rather catch a water taxi to Capri.

If we went to Capri, any suggestions on the best beach to hang out at? Is there any snorkeling.
Any options on which would we a better family excursion for the day.

Capri and Pompeii are decidedly different options.

Cake is good and steak is good, but they are not interchangeable. Can your group split and each do its own thing or is it 'one or the other'.

There is no 'right' answer. Its whats what do you want.

Steak first, then cake, sounds like a good plan to me. Sorry for that, couldn’t resist.
Yes, visiting Pompeii and snorkeling on Capri are two totally different experiences. A person who wants one might not enjoy the other at all. We don’t have any sense of the ages of your family members. Are there enough adults to divide the group, then share photos?
As far as time goes, one or two taxis from where you start (cruise port?) might be a lot faster to Pompeii, then getting to Napoli Centrale Station, then waiting for and taking the Circumvesuviana commuter train to Pompeii, which takes 30 to 40 minutes.
Pompeii is unique and very interesting for history buffs. The best art works from Pompeii are exhibited in the Archeology Museum, so the two certainly complement each other, but might be tough to cover in a single day, depending on how many hours you actually have in the city.
Sorry, I have never been to Capri.
Good luck, a family group of ten must be a challenge to plan for.
