My wife and I will be visiting Naples the first week of April next year, and plan to visit Pompeii with a guide. The first several guides I've contacted do not form groups. We're looking for up to four English speaking visitors who would like to share a guide, and split the cost. Our plans are flexible, with the exception of Sunday, April 2nd. I understand there is no admission charge at Pompeii the first Sunday of each month, and it can be very crowded.
I recall there being trained, licensed guides onsite.
Walks of Italy has a 2 1/2 hour small group tour that might suit you. It meets at the train station but you need to sign up in advance through their website.
Thanks, that's a great suggestion. Looking at the top rated guides, they charge a fixed rate for one to four visitors - per person cost goes down with four. We know we need a good guide to appreciate Pompeii, Walks of Italy looks like a reasonable option.
We just picked a guide up at the ticket area. He created his own group of 5, but I was willing to take him for his full price for the 3 of us. He was pleasant and fine.
