I have heard there is a very nice tour guide that gives fantastic tours of Pompeii. Can someone refresh my memory as to his name and how to reach him? Is it a nice tour still to hire one of the tour guides who stand in front of the Pompeii gates (I don't want to pay a lot of money).
Also, is it possible to check our luggage at Pompeii Scavi while we tour? Thanks, Ruth
Ruth, One of the Guides used by RS tours is Gaetano Manfredi. He's very knowledgeable and I found that he provided a very interesting tour. However, his rates may not be the cheapest. You could certainly try one of the Guides that will inevitably approach you as you enter the site. I've never taken any of their tours, so can't comment on how good they are. However, it's likely that to offer tours in Italy they probably have to be licensed and meet some sort of "standards". Happy travels!
As Ken mentions, Gaetano Manfredi is very good and worth every cent of his €200 fee. You might also research local options through your hotel (Sorrento?) and see if they recommend anyone. Gaetano has to be reserved well in advance. He's quite booked up in high season because R.S. groups use him a lot.
Yes there is a left luggage office at both the main entrances to Pompeii. If you are travelling the Circumvesuviana on the from/to Sorrento line you will enter the site at the Porta Marina entrance. Last time I looked the office was alongside the automatic ticket gates to the ruins.
We used a pick up guide at the front gate. We talked a few minutes (checking his English to make sure that we would understand) discussed what we were interest in see and how much time. Agreed on time and price and were very pleased. However, it was our only guide there so have no comparison with other guides. But, in general, we have always had good experience with pick up guides.
Hi Ruth I also checked on Pompeii tours. Mr Manfredi charges 200 euros for two hours plus you have to pay 11.00 euros per person for entrance fee. I am currently checking Walks of Italy tour to Pompeii. 59.00 euros per person including entrance fee plus 10% discount when you mention RS. Max persons in group is 12. Manfredi is private. Hope this helps.
Have a great vacation.
If you don't want to pay "a lot of money" than the guides at the gate are a good choice. They are licensed, offer 2 hour tours, speak English (accents may vary) and cost well under 100 Euro. We did that for our family of 4 and loved it!
Have you thought about going to Herculaneum first magnificent site not so crowded with cruise ship passengers and then onto Amalfi coast? I believe the museum in Naples has most of the artifacts from Pompeii.
