Hi All,
I've read here in the forums that if you choose with a bit of care, the on-site guides at the entry can be quite good.
Can anybody offer any suggestions to help us identify a good one?
I don't want to book in advance, I have travel commitment issues.
Thanks
We hired a guide at the door and were very pleased. My chief concern is understanding their English accent. All of them will be knowledgeable.
We hired a guide at the entry to Herculaneum. We first conversed in French, my husband's native language, then I asked her to speak English. I wouldn't hire her in French but her English was fine. So just chat a bit. The guides are all licensed by the government, so qualified.
We booked a tour company in advance for Pompeii, which worked out fine. However, at Herculaneum we did the “pick up a guide at the entrance” and he was FANTASTIC. We had an archeology student with us and he went above and beyond to provide more in-depth history to satisfy them. He was so knowledgeable and friendly. I was short of cash to pay him (which I told him before we started) and he politely walked me to the cash machine afterwards.
So how would you find this paragon? I don’t remember his name, but he was the oldest guide there. He said he’s been guiding for nearly 50 years now and is often not selected because he looks old. He was very spry and got up and down the terraces better than I did. Sad to hear about the ageism but probably true. Soooo….I suggest looking for the old guys 😝 when you get to the gate.
Thanks very much for your replies.
I feel confident that I'll choose a good one 😉.
