Pompeii to Mount Vesuvius

What is the best way to visit Mount Vesuvius from Pompeii?

We will be visiting Pompeii from Naples on July 23 or 24 and we want to visit Mount Vesuvius, including the hike to the crater. What is the best way to get to Vesuvius from Pompeii and then back to Naples? We plan to purchase the Campania Artecard, which gives us free rides on the Circumvesuviana.

I've read conflicting reviews about Busvia del Vesuvio. We could take the EAV bus, but that is limiting to the schedule and it is also 50 min. trip each way. Is there a way to get from Vesuvius entrance to Ercolana Scavi station to take us back to Naples without having to return to Pompeii?

A group of us decided at the spur of the moment to visit Vesuvius from Pompeii a few years back. I don't remember the details except that there was a ticket office for Vesuvius close to the Scavi station. We bought a round trip ticket for a bus that took us part way up the mountain. I am pretty sure that it was a privately run bus service, which is what our guide (who did not go with us) recommended. If I recall correctly, there is a public bus service that takes longer and runs less frequently -- but I may be wrong about that. Then, we transferred to a big all-terrain vehicle at the entrance to the Vesuvius national park. I don't recall whether our original ticket included the transfer or not. One way or the other, it was a simple transfer. It was a pretty rough, bouncy ride on the all-terrain vehicle. Eventually we arrived at the base of the summit and hiked another 30 minutes to the crater. Afterwards, we returned via the same route to the Scavi station, where we caught the Circumvesuviana back to Sorrento. I don't recall any of the process being challenging, which is probably why I don't remember the details.

My main recollection is that it was unbelievably cold and windy at the crater in October. Pompeii was a normal temperature, probably in the 60's or 70's. The crater was a good 20-30 degrees colder, with winds strong enough to make it challenging to stand up straight. Fortunately, there was a snack bar at the top, where I could get some hot chocolate and respite from the cold.

The excursion was well worth doing. There is something very eerie about the crater, with its huffing fumaroles --- much creepier than Etna. Also, there were beautiful views of the Bay of Naples from the summit.

Marie, thank you very much for the personal report. It's valuable to many readers here. It's particularly helpful that you compared it to "another volcano" visit. We skipped it on our Pompeii day. Do you remember how long the excursion took, overall? Did the bus return you to the same spot near Pompeii Scavi? Did they offer other drop-off points? Thank you.

Tim, the Vesuvius excursion was about half a day from start to finish. We visited Pompeii in the morning. I recall grabbing a quick panini for lunch while we were waiting for the bus to arrive, and we were back in Sorrento by supper time. There was nothing challenging about the timing or the logistics, and there was no planning involved. The official tour was supposed to return to Sorrento for a cooking class after the Pompeii visit, and four of us decided on a whim to go to Vesuvius instead. Our tour guide pointed us in the right direction from the entrance to Pompeii, and off we went.

The trail up to Vesuvius was fairly easy. I don't think the grade was more than 6%, and the trail was wide and well maintained.

We booked a tour using Tours by Locals and customized it to meet our wishes. He picked us up at our Naples hotel, we went and climbed Mt. Vesuvius (it took us an hour to climb to the top), met him back at the parking lot and he took us to Pompeii for a walking tour of Pompeii (I think 2 hours), and then we went on to tour Sorrento and the other beautiful towns. Ended back in Naples by dark. If you find a guide you like you message them and they can get you a custom fit.

I also have to mention that the BEST thing we did when we were in Naples is rented a private boat / captain to take us around Capri. It was AMAZING. We did the Blue Grotto (busy but a MUST see), the green grotto (not busy and you swim in), had lunch on the island. Completely amazing experience. There are many services that offer this type of tour. Ours was the captain and our family of 3 on a 27 foot cabin cruiser. Magnifico!
