We are traveling next week to Pompeii and want to purchase our tickets online in advance. I see via the forums that TicketOne is the official site, but I'm a bit confused as to what to choose. When we first go to the ticketing site we have to choose between
Parco Archeologico di Pompei Ingresso Piazza Anfiteatro e Piazza Esedra OR
Parco Archeologico di Pompei Cantiere della Casa di Orione e del Giardino. I see via the forums that we want to enter via Porta Marina since that's closer to the train station but its not clear which of the above tickets does that. Also, once one of the above is selected there is a choice between Pompeii and Pompeii Scavi. Help!
i'm not sure you really need to buy in advance, i've not heard of them ever selling out, maybe just a small line
perhaps others can chime in as well
I agree with what you wrote. That ticket site is a disaster, I don't know what to tell you. I agree that it's better to arrive without a ticket than to have the wrong one - especially so early in the season. Do you only want to visit Pompeii Scavi, or are you also going to Herculaneum or the three smaller sites in other towns? Only asking to determine your ticket needs.
Check the weather forecast. It would be too bad to have a timed and DATED ticket on a rainy day. This is a huge, exposed site. (Also subject to sun and heat!)
Thanks so much. We are just planning on visiting Pompeii since we'll have our kiddos with us and we can probably only make it through one of the sites. I was trying to figure out whether being there close-ish to Easter would mean there's more tourists in Italy, but it sounds like there's a low chance of it being as crowded as the summer.
100% in agreement with Tim: the ticketone website (today, anyway) is impossible! I've no idea why there isn't a ticket for the Porta Marina entrance (considered the main entrance, and closest to the Circumvesuviana station if taking that train) and why there is a choice between Pompeii and Pompeii Scavi.
I'd go with just showing up next week and buying a ticket at the Porta Marina entrance, unless you're going on Saturday (see info in the link below).
I sort of wonder if the website is such a mess because Free 1st Sundays for Italian state museums were sort of thrown at them by the Ministry of Culture at the last minute (tomorrow is a free Sunday, and the announcement was just made a day or two ago) and they're scrambling to overhaul some info. That shouldn't be the issue but it's certainly strange! I'll take a peek on Monday and see if it's less of a hairball.

We are going Wed. April 13th (so not next week - I'm getting ahead of myself). Glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks the ticketing site is a mess.
Easy to buy entry ticket when you get there. It has been a while but as I recall the line was no longer than what I typically have at a grocery store.
