Pompeii tickets

We are going to be visiting Pompeii on Wednesday May 29. Our plan is to get into Naples at 11:50. Get some pizza and then head over for a few hours to see some of Pompeii (we may or may not hire a guide when we get there.) Our train back from Naples is at 7:30. I am assuming I should buy tickets ahead of time to save time and avoid a line but was wondering if anyone has any other suggestions on a tour or better way to do this. When I looked at the website to purchase entrance tickets they have a time of 8:30 am for tickets for that day, but I am assuming that is when it opens and you can go in whenever you arrive. Does anyone know if that is correct? Should I look for a tour that goes later in the afternoon or should I just wait and see if there is a guide available whenever we get there? Thanks for any info and insight!

Hello,

I used a tour guide last year with my family. It felt rushed and too planned out, if that makes sense. The one good thing is that our tour guide was well known and we cut in front of large groups. This was helpful because my mom is 80 years old. It comes down to personal preference. We are going back to Pompeii this year in June, and I do not plan to hire a guide. This way we can wander at our own pace. When we got there there lines did not seem really long, but I am going to pre-purchase tickets anyways. Hope this helps.

When I went there was no real issue with a line at the ticket window. Not sure I would bother with buying ahead.

RS has what I think is a very good audio guide ( free!), which we used and found that we seemed to go all the places the guided groups went.
