We are US teachers on Spring Break with a few extra hooky days. R/T from LA to Rome and have spent 4 days in Rome on a prior trip. Landing at FCO on 3/22 at 1pm. My though was to take the train to Naples and stay for a few days then on to Sorento for a few days with day trips to Capri and Positano. Return to Rome for a few days including Easter Sunday before leaving for LA on Monday April at 10am.
Pompeii is on our bucket list. How do we best fit it into our itinerary?
Is it OK to day trip to Positano or should we spend a night there?
Any recommendations on good value hotels for Rome, Naples & Sorrento moderately priced?
Thanks for your thoughts, Dan
Hotels- Have stayed at Hotel Aberdeen in Rome and would not hesitate to do so again.--- http://www.hotelaberdeen.it/en/default.html
In Sorrento have stayed at Il Nido. Fantastic view and great breakfast-- http://ilnido.it/
I would do Pompeii as a day trip from either Sorrento or Naples. I would not do it on the transit day between the two, just to avoid dragging all the luggage on/off the train an extra time.
I would not bother with a one nighter in Positano. Spend 2 nights or do day trip.
I would agree with Joe, take a day trip to Pompeii, maybe including Herculaneum too, as a day trip from either Naples or Sorrento. Beats the hassle of lugging and storing baggage. In Naples, I heartily recommend the Orsini46 B & B, but it is small, just 3 rooms, is very popular, and is likely fully booked by now.
Here's another vote to make Pompeii and Herculaneum a day trip (or one day for Pompeii and half day for Herculaneum) from either Naples or Sorrento. The archaeological area (scavi) of Pompeii is a city, very spread out so you can easily spend a whole day walking around if you want to really see it thoroughly. Herculaneum is more compact and a very different experience.
I saw Pompeii as a day trip from Naples, spent 2 nights there, it's a easy train ride. Takes about an hour on the Circumvesuviana. I suggest you go to the Archaeological Museum in Naples as it contains many of the original artifacts from Pompeii. Fascinating! People recommend Herculaneum, I did not have time for it.
Another tip about Pompeii, try to avoid the weekends as the cruise ships drop off thousands of people it seems. Go early or later in the day. My mistake, I arrived at 10 am!
