We are in Rome and saw news that there were numerous crowds do to the opening of something "Golden". Does anyone know if this means all of the ruins or just this area is overcrowded? We are considering going to Ostia Antica instead. We have another week in Rome.

Sorry to not answer your specific question but it is hot here now and no shade at Pompeii makes it unbearable ( to me ) have you considered the nearby better preserved and more compact ercolano?

I think that Pompeii is worth seeing regardless of heat, crowds, and Golden things opening! The area of the excavated ruins are very expansive so I really don't think that crowds are too much of an issue. There is a lot to see and you can't cover it all in one day but you can certainly hit the highlights. In my opinion it's incredibly fascinating, beautiful, and the sophistication of the infrastructure of the city is very surprising. I really recommend that you see it since you are there!
