I will be using RS's guide book and audio of Pompeii Scavi===but wondering if the different sites within the scavi are well marked with information about that site. I won't be using a guide. Thanks for any help
We took a guide first and after two hours of personal assistance we explored on our own. And I have to say I found it very difficult to find my way around and not get lost. Once you're inside the site there is not that much in signage and information available.
I just walked through with Rick's mp3 tour playing on my mp3. It was a great tour and took me a bit over 3 hrs (I'm perfectly healthy and almost still young ;-). That's plenty for a 1st visit. It you want to know a bit more you get a nice, thick guide for free with your ticket (actually you might have to ask for the guidebook, but it was free, as was storing our bags right next to the gate). Also free: drinkable water from public spigots on-site.
You get a map when you buy your tickets but the site is not well signed at all. I have done the site several times on my own buying a book at the bookstore on the site. That was plenty for me. Even without a book you'll enjoy the site. Check out your local bookstore to see if they have any info on it. http://www.amazon.com/dp/050005150X?tag=mummytombs&link_code=as3&creativeASIN=050005150X&creative=373489&camp=211189
Do you think RS's book (Rome, includes Pompeii) with his notes and his audio would be sufficient to get the "jest" of it?
I have an older version of that book and I think you'll be fine. It seems to hit all the highlights and most popular spots in Pompeii. That along with the map you get at the site should be fine. Donna
