Is anyone aware of the availability to store luggage at the excavation of Pompeii? According to Rick's book, there is storage at the Pompeii entrance but want to be sure that is still a possibility in 2008. I'll be traveling from Rome to Sorrento and thought I would stop to see the site on my way to Sorrento. Thanks.
Yes, I think there is storage. However, Sorrento is SO close to Pompeii Scavii that I would choose just to go onto Sorrento, check into my hotel, and spend the day seeing Sorrento. Wake up refreshed the next morning while it's early and cool and take the 15 minute train ride to Pompeii Scavii and tour the site.
That's the way we did it, and it turned out to be very nice and not rushed.
When I was at Pompeii in 2006, the free baggage storage at the entrance by the Circumvesuviana was open. I had used it on a previous trip (stopped on my way from Sorrento to Rome) and it worked out well. Only downside to stopping on your way from Rome to Sorrento is that Pompeii closes at sundown and your time may be limited if not travelling when days are longer. There is an official website for Pompeii that might mention dates and times the baggage storage is open. If the free storage is closed, I believe there's another place near the entrance that will store bags for a small fee.
We stored our luggage at Pompeii in June, 2007. It was very easy. We had come from Sorrento towards Rome by train and it all worked out very well.
