We will be driving from Cortona to Sorrento on a Saturday in July. We will be stopping at Pompeii on our way down. When we did this drive 20 years ago (in July also), parking was easy (right at the site). However, my husband seems to remember that we paid the parking attendant 'extra' to watch our car. I'm sure times have changed (or maybe not) so if anyone has a recent experience (and advice!) about Parking at Pompeii I'd love to hear it. Specifically, safety (we will have our stuff in the trunk with no way around that), where to park, cost of parking and/or any other advice about parking. Thanks in advance savvy travelers!

When I was there 3 yrs ago I took the rail line form Sorrento and left the car at the hotel. My thought when we got there was "sure glad we took the train".
Do not have specific recollection of the parking itself.
Can you arrange your schedule to take the train from Sorrento and not worry about the availability, expense and safety of parking a rental car?

Since we drive right past Pompeii, we do not want to drive the extra hour to Sorrento then hoof it back to Pompeii. We did it many years ago and, from what I remember, it was pretty easy and our car was none the worse for wear. But times have changed and I'm curious what recent experiences people have had with parking in the lots by Pompeii.
