Pompeii or Orvieto for day trip from Rome?

Which do you think is a better way to spend one day from Rome? Or, should we do Pompeii as a day trip then stop in Orvieto on our way to Venice on the train? Is there secure baggage storage in Orvieto for an afternoon?

Pompeii can take 4hrs or more if you wish. then to stop in Orvieto then same day to Venice (i suppose at night)seems like too much for one day. Consider ostia antica outside Rome for a ruins area then leisurely train to Venice. Orvirto is wonderful but Tuscanny can be done better on a separate trip.

I would think of Orvieto as a one day event, not an "on the way." There's a tremedous amount to see in Orvieto and it's a great "break" in the middle of your time in Rome! It's about an hour up and and an hour back by train.

Pompeii is about 2 1/2 hours ONE WAY from Rome, up and back. I'd save Pompeii for a trip when I had more time to spend in the South of Italy and not feel rushed. As JS says in the previous post, Ostia Antica is a geat option - and it's only a 35 minute ride on the Rome metro (1 Euro)!

The train to Venice is about 4 1/2 hours so that tends to make for a long day... just head to Venice and relax when you get there! I'd spend as much time there as I could!

I'm with Ron on this one. Orvieto is only an hour from Rome by train. It's a day trip from Rome, not to be done on the way to Venice. Rome to Venice on the EuroStar is about 4 1/2 hours. Rome to Orvieto is about an hour. Orvieto to Venice is over 5 hours because there are no fast trains between these two cities.

Ostia Antica isn't as well known as Pompeii but it's a wonderful city of ruins just outside Rome. Not only will Pompeii take about 5 hours in transport time, round-trip tickets are about 70 euro per person. Ostia Antica can be reached for 2 euro per person round trip.
