My itinerary has us visiting Pompeii on Friday, daytripping from Rome. Would it better to visit Pompeii on Thursday? I only want to make the change if there's a big difference since we will be arriving in Rome on Wednesday. Thanks.

If you're arriving in Rome from a US flight on Wednesday, Friday will work better for you, because my guess is that you're not going to get the best night of sleep you ever had on Wednesday night, and it's necessary to get up early and have lots of energy on your Pompeii day trip day, which is a long day. So I'd suggest Friday for Pompeii.
To give you an idea of the train travel time from Rome to Pompei, the early high-speed Eurostars out of Rome to Naples begin at 6:45am. The trip takes just under 2.0hrs. The first of the fastest ES-Alta Velocita trains departs at 7:25. This trip to Naples takes 1hr-21min.
Next, you have to go downstairs in the Napoli Garibaldi station and get on the private Circumvesuviana train to the Pompei-Scavi stop. This journey will take 36 minutes. Thus, with time in the train stations, you are looking at almost 5.0hrs of travel time. Plan for a long day.
There are buses to Pompei out of the Rome Tiburtina train station but there are only a couple per day. The trains provide far more flexibility.
Thanks for the good info. Actually, we will be arriving in Rome from Orvieto on Wednesday - just a short train ride. I really don't want to spend Thursday as a long travel day. Last year, we took the Eurostar from Rome and changed over to the Circumvesuviana. I am wondering if the crowds are worse on Friday or Thursday. When we were there last year on a Monday, there really weren't a lot of crowds except in the restaurant, which I understand is now closed. I'd like to go on Friday this year unless there are a lot of crowds in Pompeii on Fridays. Thank you!
