Pompeii on the first Sunday...

My husband had planned on going to Pompeii from Rome on July 5 which happens to be the first Sunday(free). Is it going to be too crowded since it is free admission? Should we change our itinerary? or is it going to be crowded regardless and we should just go on the free day?

July will be crowded. You should get there as early as possible in the morning. We drove from near Cassino starting out very early and got there at opening. It was magical; after the tour busses arrived, it was still amazing!
