Pompeii on First Sunday of the month?

We will be stopping at Naples on a cruise on June 1, which happens to be the first Sunday of the month. We want to visit Pompeii. My understanding is that Pompeii is free entrance that day. I know that they may cap the number of visitors there, and I was wondering how I can make sure that we don't get turned away? Is there a reliable site to use to make sure I get in that day if I buy tickets ahead of time? I'm open for either guided tour, or using an audio tour.

So what I have been told if if you have to go on a Free Sunday Pompeii is large enough to handle a large crowd. Much worse places/museums to be than Pompeii. It will hold 20k before they pause entry's.

Be sure to be in line before 9am when Pompeii opens on free Sunday so you can see Pompeii first thing before the heat of the day and the gathering crowds make conditions there formidable.

I saw pictures today. Horrible. Wait was 4 hours and they didnt have the fast track line open for those who had tickets.

This is what I'm afraid of happening..... I may need to re-think my plans for that day. Just bad timing.

I have found that "free days" mean avoid all but the most obscure sights. I would gladly pay a premium to go any other day.

That's the problem. I'm on a cruise and that is the day we are in Naples. As I said above, just bad timing.

One of the places that is considered Pompeii is Oplontis. I happen to be there on the free sunday, of course it was in November and at 9:00 a.m. it was just myself and another man. Also If I remember correctly The Villa dei Misteri which is at the far end of the Pompeii grounds had an entrance itself which would mean you would be starting at the least likely entrance to Pompeii itself. If you enter the usual Pompeii entrance you will need to pay eight Euros extra to go into the Villa dei Misteri. You definitely want to be at the Villa by yourselves with the least
crowd possible.
