My husband and I will be visiting Pompeii the last week of October. As I am putting together our itinerary, I am wondering if there is a better day of the week. Right now I am looking at Pompeii on Monday. Does anyone have advice?
From where are you making the daytrip to Pompeii? How long do you imagine visiting for? (Most Pompeii entries are from 2 to 8 hours of visit time.) This is shoulder season, so the issues are only temperature, rain, and sunset time. I would buy my ticket just before entering. You should check the official open hours, which are related to sunrise and sunset. Note that you cannot exit and re-enter the same day on the same ticket, so a long visit will include the cafeteria-style lunchroom inside the Pompeii ruins.
Note that Pompeii is very large, and has uneven Roman paving stones. You need to wear supportive shoes that would work well on a city of loose, crooked cobblestones. In the summer you need sun protection. I don't know about October. When I talk about sunset, I am suggesting that you reckon with the fact that closing time changes to 5:00PM on November 1!
I don't know if there's a difference, but I'm guessing Mondays might be slightly busier because Monday tends to be the day museums are closed elsewhere.
We took a day trip to Pompeii in early November 2021, and it was an excellent time to be there, we thought. Although we did get rained on a bit, it meant the site was quiet overall, so we didn't have to deal with crowds or heat.
Hi there -
Pompeii scavi is HUGE so other than maybe some sites close to the main entry and some notable structures - such as the baths - that tend to be very busy, I don't think it'll matter much. If you can wait to buy your tickets when you get there, I'd just choose a dry day.
