Hi all, I will have 5 days in Rome this October and want to visit both pompeii and national archaeology museum in Naples as a day trip from Rome. I found information on how to get to Pompeii already but couldn't find information on how to get the museum from pompeii. If you know any information, please share it with me. I know that I will not get all the details in one day, but is it possible to have a general ideas on those two places within one day? In the museum, I planned to visit only exhibitions related to pompeii only.
From Pompeii, take the "Circumvesuviana" local train to Naples Centrale, "Napoli Garibaldi." Exit the train and follow the signs to the Metropolitana (the metro). Take the metro - direction Pozzuoli - and get off at the first stop "Cavour." From Cavour you can walk to the museum. Seeing both Pompeii and the museum in one day is certainly possible. Figure maybe 4 hours for Pompeii and 2 -3 for the museum. Get started early.
Nhan, I was in Napoli in March, and spent my one day, a Saturday in Pompeii and Ercolano (Herculaneum). This was not enough time. Pompeii by itself is very spread out, and I spent 3.5 hrs. there, and could have easily doubled it. Ercolano (Herculaneum) is closer to Napoli, is a lot smaller, and seemed to me to be better preserved. I saw all of it in about 2.5-3 hours. One day to see both Pompeii and the Museum seems like too much to me. I heard that there is a train that runs from Naples to Pompeii, though I did not take it, I got a cab. The Museo Metro stop, is one up from Dante (the Plazza Dante Alighieri) stop. Ciao, Michael
Rick's Italy book has excellent directions from the Naples train station to the museum. I'd go to the museum first, since I think it closes earlier than Pompeii. You start at the Naples train station to get to either the museum or Pompeii (or Herculaneum). Herculaneum is only about 10 minutes closer to Naples than Pompeii - and it is about a 10 minute walk to the site, while Pompeii is about 10 meters from the train.
Thanks for the help.
Hi guys, It's me again. After some research, I find out there's Pompeii shuttle service in Rome. It starts at 7:45AM, arrive at 10:45 and return to Rome at 3:30. So it gives me 4 hours to explore Pompeii on my own. It costs 60Euro, a little bit higher than the cheapest train but saves all the logistics hassle. With this option, I will not be able to go to the national museum though and less flexibility. The big bonus is probably the peace of mind. I read that Naples in general and its train stations are not exactly safe so I'm thinking about it again. I'm a girl who's going to travel alone so I don't wanna take too much risk. How do you guys see it? Is it a good offer? If you've been to Naples, is it that bad? I'm going to travel in daylight and will return to Rome around 6:00PM.
