We will be staying in Sorrento and plan to do a day-trip to Pompeii. Can we also visit the museum in Naples and have a pizza, all in the same day? I know it's a short train ride to Pompeii but can we see the ruins and get to Naples with enough time to spare?
The main collection at the archeological museum in Napoli is open Wednesday to Monday - 09:00 to 19:30, other collections may only be open 09:00 to 13:30. Pompeii may make more sense if you see the museum first, but you can take the Circumvesuviana train early in the morning to Pompeii, then continue to Napoli for lunch or dinner and the museum.
Pompeii is open from 8:30-19:30, last admission at 18:00 or 18:30.
Many posters suggest at least 3 hours for Pompeii and 2-3 hours for the museum. Travel time is a little over an hour from Sorrento to Napoli, less than an hour to Pompeii. Factoring in 2 hours for lunch and additional transportation (waiting) time, you are looking at a full day.
The Circumvesuviana starts running from Sorrento pretty early, I think around 6:00 - check to be sure or perhaps another poster has that information.
Easily. The only day you could not do the archaeological museum is tues. when it's closed.
After Pompeii, hop back on the circumvesuvian to Naples then transfer to metro line 2 to
the Cavore stop. We've had great Pisa at Restaurante Bellini 2 blocks south of the museum.
Cross the street, go thru the gallerie and unto Piazza Bellini. on the left.
