So I've spent numerous hours perusing old threads here and on TA on this adventure. My husband and I are going to go as a day trip from Rome this upcoming September. We debated on Ostia, but feel this is our prefered trip. We would leave on the 6:45AM train from Rome, arriving in Naples at 8:30AM. From there, completely unsure. Must haves: - Pompeii or Herculaneum, with guide - Pizza in Naples Ideas: 1 - Switch trains and go directly to Pompeii- arrive around 9:15AM. Find a 2 hour guided tour, stay and tour until around 12PM. - Catch the train to Herculaneum. Eat lunch there. Find a tour. Stay until 3PM. - Train back to Naples. Visit Museum with archives, then eat at a pizzaria. - Return to Rome Idea 2: - Naples to Herculaneum. Spend morning with guided tour and eploring site. Lunch on way out. - Head to Mt. Vesuvius. Climb to top.
- Train to Naples, see museum and get some pizza. Are either of these plans do-able?? Since weve never been, its hard to eliminate. Both my husband and I are young (late twenties) and physically fit. Neither of us are "super" into history/archeology, but interested enough we wanted to make the trip. Too many choices! Please help narrow down :)
I would go to Herculaneum first, it's about halfway to Pompeii. After that I would go to the museum then end in Pompeii. When you walk from Herculaneum back to the train station you'll pass some really good pizza places. Just stop in for a quick bite. I doubt you'll have time to climb Vesuvius and fit in more than one other thing. Even if you're not hugely into archeology you'll enjoy both Pompeii and Herculaneum. They are so interesting and there's so much to see. I would split my time between them. Donna
Hi Donna, Thanks for the response. The museum I am talking about is the Naples National Archaeological Museum. I don't think it would make sense to backtrack there?? I'm also not sure how long we would need to spend there- we are not big 'museum people' but feel like it would enrich our experience. So does Rome - Pompeii - Herculaneum - Naples - Rome make sense? I know we have to pass through Naples on our way to Pompeii, but we will not stop. Laura
