Pompeii/Mt Vesuvius-admission

we would like to book a tour from ‘Sorrento’, to Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius. I have notice that the tours do not include the admission fee to both.

Do we have to line up and by tickets when we arrive or does the tour guide collect from guests and purchase all at once?

Not sure I want to wait in line to pay for both attractions along with everyone else on the tour.

What tours are you looking at? If you're on an escorted tour, with a guide, you will do any waiting that's necessary to keep the group together. How tickets are collected, how much waiting is involved, etc. depends on individual tour operations as there's no single company which does these.

We did Pompeii on our own and didn't experience much of a queue at all but were there before the opening hour in the fall.

Personally? I wouldn't do both Pompeii and Vesuvius from Sorrento in a single day but that's just me. In fact, we skipped Vesuvius altogether as you can see it clearly from Pompeii, just as the unfortunates who perished in its eruptions did.

I don’t recall that Mount Vesuvius had any sort of fees attached but we were on a coach tour so perhaps that was included. Seeing the caldera from the 79 AD eruption from the inside was quite impressive. The climb from the last parking lot isn't especially difficult unless it’s really hot outside. The view of the Bay of Naples from the lip of the new caldera is breathtaking. It's also a bit sobering when you see how many people would be threatened by a new eruption. I probably would not go again but I don't regret having seen it once.
