Pompeii day trip

In the past a day trip from Rome to Pompeii was tough and long. But with super fast trains- up to almost 200 mph - it is worth considering. You can get to Pompeii from Rome in about 75 minutes. Once there you need a guide. I cannot recommend groups of 25-35 people. We booked Gaetano Manfredi and his son Ciro ahead before leaving home. Rick has recommended them too . Great tour for the3 of us. A bit longer than others I have seen. They have been doing these Pompeii tours for 4 generations! Worth every dollar. We did a side trip after Pompeii to Sorrento. Left Rome at 7;40 am and back in Rome by 6:30 pm

mjh4147,, Trenitalia is not showing this journey in less than 1 hr, 47 minutes, and that's only on Sundays with an 8:53 departure from Roma Termini with no change in Naples. I'm not seeing a 7:40 train from Roma Termini to Pompei at all on any day of the week. Are you sure you didn't change trains in Naples? If you did, a fast train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale is approx. 70 minutes, and Circumvesuviana (slow commuter) from there to Pompei Scavi - Villa dei Misteri takes abt. 30 additional minutes, not including time to transfer stations (Centrale to Garibaldi) buy tickets and board the next train.

I'll agree that rail is faster than any of the bus tours but what am I missing? What day of the week did you make this trip, and how did you do it in 75 minutes? Would be useful for other travelers to know.

I should have been more precise. My mistake. The trains to which I referred are the Italo and frecciarossa from Rome to NAPLES…. These co not go to Pompeii at this time. Manfredi had us met at the train and drove to Pompeii.

Ah, thanks for that clarification, mjh4147. I thought that you maybe meant 75 minutes to Naples and not to Pompeii but best not to assume. Yes, much better to go independently by rail than a loooooong bus ride (both directions) if one is to make a day trip of it. You can spend more time at the excavation - which is VAST - if you aren't on the bus' timeline.
