Pompeii

We arrive Naples from the US on a Wednesday at noon in late April. A driver from our hotel in Positano will pick up at at the airport and bring us to our hotel.

Will a two hour quick tour of Pompeii be exhausting or worth it before going to the hotel??

Highly not recommended. You will be exhausted, out in the sun, and two hours just isn't enough. Safe travels!

Though two hours is doable, I would recommend against it. You'll practically be running through the site. Pompeii might be an ancient city, but it is surprisingly big.

Give yourself four hours.

In September 2022, I visited Pompeii for four hours. I wish I had had more time there. It was worth the investment in time.

Totally agree. Very easy to get there from Positano. Take the local bus to Sorrento and then the train to I think it is the first Pompeii stop. Returning get off the second Positano.stop on the bus.be sure to take water sunscreen and I would wear a hat. it is worth it but not the way you suggest.

I'm not certain, because I haven't taken public transportation on the Amalfi Peninsula, but I think you can also catch the Circumvesuviana toward Pompeii in Meta, which would mean somewhat less travel time than going all the way to Sorrento on the bus. Meta's served by SITA Sud buses.

You should see Pompeii after you have rested for a night, so you can enjoy it.

Nope, wouldn't do it right off a transcontinental flight, and the excavation deserves more than 2 hours unless one only has a passing interest in the thing.

Another point about Pompeii is that the streets are paved with awkwardly large cobblestones. It's sometimes necessary to walk down the streets because of clots of people on the sidewalks. You don't want to have to hurry across cobblestones in general, and those at Pompeii are the worst I've ever seen. Dealing with them is very tiring, and after an overnight flight I wouldn't want to attempt it.

Just to add, regarding the train, you want the Pompeii Scavi stop, not the Pompeii stop (which is for the town).

Previous replies are all correct and reasonable. However, Positano is not an ideal sleeping location for visiting Pompeii. It's an hour on the bus, an hour on the train, and an average 15 minute wait for each of them. That doesn't count late public transportation service, which does happen.

Early in April, the bus may not be too crowded. But by mid May you can expect all busses to be full, with a line to board that may be larger than the capacity of one bus.

You need to take this into consideration on your departure home, if you are flying home from Rome. It is essentially impossible to wake up in Positano and fly to the US from Rome that day. A common recommendation is to shift some "Rome days" to the very end of such a trip.
