Pompeii day trip logistics

We are going to Pompeii on 4/25...family of four. I bought tickets from Rome to Naples on the high speed train...we leave at 845 and arrive just before 11. Plan to catch the 1111 train to Pompeii. We will enter at noon-ish.

Would you buy a 6pm train back from Naples to Rome ahead of time? Or wait until that day and see what time we're ready to leave? I could even book the 7pm and kill any extra time in Naples eating.

The only train between Naples and Pompeii is the Circumvesuviana, and there are no reserved seats and as far as I know, no advance sales of tickets. You buy a ticket to Pompeii, and another one from Pompeii to Naples. When you are ready to leave Pompeii, you go to the train station at Scavi and wait for the Circumvesuviana to arrive and hop on after stamping your ticket. Easy peasy; you leave when you want to.

Edited to add that there is a possible trip on the main line railroad on the Naples/Salerno run, but that deposits you far from the excavations. The Circumvesuviana is easier.

I understand the Naples to Pompeii and back part. My question is Naples back to Rome. Prebook a seat, or just show up and hope four are available at walk up price?

Check Trenitalia for scheduled trains back to Rome. Sorry about the previous post; I should have read it closer. Personally, I've never done Pompeii from Rome.

It depends on what you want to spend? It you can commit to a train with economy or super-economy tickets available NOW for a reduced price, you'll probably save a considerable amount of $$$ - which means more gelato for all! :O)

Walk-up tickets for fast trains will almost always be base priced, and those are the most expensive tickets. I'd err on the side of extra time so you don't have to hurry. Pompeii is a HUGE site that can take considerable time to explore depending on how personally interesting you find it.

April 25th... liberation day.

I think we will buy tickets on the 7pm. Gives us lots of time and we can wander around Naples if we leave Pompeii early.

Yep, sorry, I picked up the 24th from one of your previous threads and missed mention of the 25th in your post above.
Have edited that error out of my previous post.

If you have a 2-3 hours once you get back to Naples, jleonardis, there isn't a helluva lot right around Napoli Centrale station. Best to do some advance research as to a great Napolitan pizza restaurant to dine at, or even a neighborhood like Quartieri Spagnoli (tip: Da Michele is overrated, there are tons of other places) and hire a taxi right outside the station to take you there, maybe even pick you up at an appointed time. Probably cost you 15-18 Euro each way (regulated fares), and the drivers are usually a riot. They're fun, nice and not thieves.

We did a day trip to Pompeii and Vesuvius from Rome. Took the fast train to Naples and then the Circumvesuviana to Pompeii. After our visit to Pompeii, took a cab from station which took us to Vesuvius, waited for us there and then dropped us at Naples station.

I had prebooked on the Trenitalia website Rome-Naples-Rome fast train economy tickets and got a real good price.
