Pompeii Day Trip from Rome (2026 version!)

Hi Giangilberto from Milan, good morning. To start, one point to consider is that November 1st is a national holiday in Italy All Saints' Day. Although it falls on a Sunday this year, it could lead to larger crowds at sites like Pompei, with an influx of Italian tourists joining the usual stream of international visitors.
Italy has a government initiative called "Sunday at the Museum" (Domenica al museo), where the vast majority of museums and archaeological sites across the country including Pompei offer free admission on the first Sunday of every month. Consequently, this is the day with the highest number of visitors. Admission procedures also change, according to the official website:
For "Domenica al museo" and other special free-admission days at Pompei , it is not possible to book or purchase tickets online. Visitors enter directly via the turnstiles, bypassing the ticket office. This allows for immediate access to the site and direct monitoring of visitor flow.
Tickets will not be issued in the visitor's name, though the daily limit of 20,000 visitors remains in effect.

My advice is to visit Pompeii alone without rushing, skipping the Amalfi Coast. The last entry is at 3:30 PM, but I would recommend arriving for the first morning slot at 9:00 AM, as there are bound to be long lines. Temperatures in early November can be quite pleasant, which tends to further increase visitor numbers. Regarding transport: if you have had bad experiences with the Circumvesuviana, you can take a standard Trenitalia train from Napoli Centrale to Pompei. Please note that the stop is "Pompei," not "Pompei Scavi" (the latter is served by a different line that does not depart from Napoli Centrale). From the "Pompei" station, it is about a 15 minute walk to the archaeological site. Trenitalia also offers a service called Freccialink, which combines a high speed train with a bus to the ruins; however the last day of operation for the bus service is October 18th. There is also a regular train to Pompeii town which places you near the east end of the site (the stadium end). When you go to the main entrance you tour the site and you end up at the stadium and then you walk back through the site to the main entrance. If you go to the Pompeii town regular train station then you walk the length of the site outside its wall and then enter, tour the site and can exit near the stadium and near the town station. In both cases you walk the distance twice.

Good advice above. The issue with those bus trips from Rome - and especially those that combine Pompeii with the Amalfi Coast - is that you spend the majority of the day sitting on that bus. As well, they spend WAY too little time at Pompeii, and you're tied to their timetable and not your own. Personal preference, maybe, but some of those 7+ hours on the bus are hours better spent NOT sitting on a bus, and Pompeii deserves as many hours as your feet can manage.

I'd definitely go with taking a fast train to Napoli, as you did before, and go on a different day than All Saints for the reasons Giangilberto has highlighted. Didn't care for the Circumvesuviana? Use one of the other methods provided above. Skip the Amalfi: that region is best done on a different trip when you can give it quality time. Consider as well if the day you've set aside for the trip turns out of be a wet one, a bus trip along the coast won't be much fun.

Check Trip Advisor as it has a number of day trips from Rome to Pompeii. It will list who the Tour Operator is if you want to book directly with them. The days and dates of tours are also available. Did a combined day trip Rome to Positano then Pompeii a couple of years ago. Quite the slog especially the tedious stop at the Limoncello Gift shop on the way back and the beach at Positano was quite awful - along with the restaurants offering lunch

I think a tour by Enjoy Rome is what you're looking for. It doesn't go to the Amalfi Coast. We took their tour years ago just for the ride and did not purchase the additional guided tour. I noticed that they are currently sold out, so book early. I did not check your date. The fact that they are sold out may indicate that this is a popular way to get to Pompeii from Rome.

That shuttle service (thru Enjoy Rome, on a day it's offered/not sold out) ) would work but I would note that they list the total trip time as 12 hours. 4 of those hours are at Pompeii. That means that 8 of those 12 hours are on the bus/loading/unloading/etc. Personally, that would be way too much sitting for a day trip but we're all different. :O)

Are you absolutely sure you guys want to do this? ...It's like taking a bus trip from Dallas to San Antonio, spending 4 hours and hopping on the bus back to Dallas. It sounds dreadful to me, and you're already in a spectacular destination city of Rome where you could spend weeks and not see everything. And honestly 4 hours in Pompeii really isn't enough to do that justice.

Pompeii is really amazing but in this case I just don't know if the juice is worth the squeeze. Maybe consider saving it for your next trip when you can overnight near the scavi?

Note that the Trenitalia train to modern Pompeii city does not stop opposite the Amfiteatro entrance, but over 1/2 mile away. The reviled but cheap Circumvesuviana commuter train stops diagonally opposite the Porta Marina entrance to Pompeii Scavi.

Because we always hope to visit often-closed Villa dei Misteri, our self-guided tour does not end at the amphitheater, but at the lightly used (and often exit-only) Villa dei Misteri entrance to the site. Then a shaded walk back to the Circumvesuviana.

This told me that only on Sundays there is one direct high speed rail offered to and from Pompeii. This actually gives me 6+ hours at Pomeii. (Arrives 10:45 AM, Departs 6:40 PM). I went ahead and booked that train. @Giangilberto reference this.

@Giangilberto also confirming that trying to do Pompeii and Amafi Coast on the same day was not a good plan. It's strange to me after reading Rick's book that very few (if any) of the bus tours try to combine the Pompei Museum in Naples and the Pompeii site on the same day.

The reason I was planning to do Pompeii on Sunday is that it sounded like Rome might be really crowded with many free museum offerings on that first Sunday of November, plus its a holiday.

So now the question becomes whats the best way to spend 6+ hours in Pompeii. Looks like a 15 minute walk from the main train station in Pompei to the site. I see a few third party guides are available. Any thoughts from the experts?

For the benefit of others who might be considering this, we dd the Enjoy Rome day trip in 2008 and I don't remember it being 12 hours. I had done the day trip that included the Amalfi Coast in 1997 and it was a long day-7AM until 9 PM I think but I remember the Enjoy Rome day trip as being considerably shorter and it was an easy trip. I was glad I took both trips, even the long one. Pompeii is worth it.

You will spend it fighting the crowds. Remember what was said about the first Sunday of the month, plus it being a holiday. You can hire a guide at the entrance. Or you can DIY with an audioguide. Be sure to scope out in advance where you will have lunch, since they are limited inside the grounds.

It's strange to me after reading Rick's book that very few (if any) of
the bus tours try to combine the Pompei Museum in Naples and the
Pompeii site on the same day.

I'd guess it's due to the vastness of the Pompei excavation. I can say positively that after 5-6 hours at the scavi - not including transport time from Sorrento, and would have had to add time to Naples - we would have been too knackered to give MANN proper attention.

It's another attraction I'd probably personally avoid on a Free Sunday.
