We would really like to do a Pompeii day trip from Rome. I did this solo about 8 years ago: I left early, took the train to Naples, and then transferred to the smaller train to Pompeii. I was able to spend as much time as I wanted at Pompeii—I think it was probably about 4 hours—and then made the same trip in reverse. I just did a self-guided tour using the audio devices obtained when I bought my ticket.
However, I did not like the experience on that small train, and I really don't want to take it again. But this trip, other family members want to go to Pompeii.
I thought it would be easier just to book a tour bus trip, and there are some day tours of interest that combine Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast in one day. One nice feature is that payment, bus transport, and admission tickets with a guide are all included. However, these trips only give you 2 hours at Pompeii, and they include a forced stop to be sold a lemon drink—which I'm sure is great, but it isn't what I'm trying to accomplish.
Is there a day trip from Rome that allows more than 2 hours in Pompeii that anyone knows of?
Also, I was planning to go on Sunday, which is All Saints' Day, so it looks like some tours might not be running that day. Is that to be expected?
