Hi, We (my friend and I) are going to Italy in mid-Sept, and planning to go to Pompeii either Sept 7 or 8..... either with a small tour or on our own. Neither of us has gone to Pompeii yet, but I've been to Italy before, and was a Latin student, and my friend is into art history.
BUT, on the Pompeii website they mention Night Walks, that they're doing Fri and Sat nights, July-Sept. Has anyone done this? How does it compare to the experience of touring the site during the day?
I can’t speak to the Night Walks but I would recommend doing a tour of some kind. Small group is better (we booked with a tour co through Viator and had 7) if you can swing it. Usually, I’m an audio guide person but having an actual guide really added immensely to our visit to the site. Pompeii is truly awesome.

Have been to Pompeii twice, you really can't see the whole site in one visit. To do a tour, there are guides located by the gates who do a fabulous
job. The tours are about 2 hours long, hit some of the important stops then you're free to wander on your own for as long as you like.
