Pompeii, Capri, Sorrento

I would like some feedback regarding Pompeii, Capri, Sorrento and Naples. Our family (19 of us and 4 generations) is taking a Mediterranean cruise. I'm looking for advice for our one day stop in Naples. Some want to go to both Pompeii and Capri. The ship offers an excursion to both and includes Sorrento but considering that there are several children along, would this be too fast-paced to attempt to do all three in a day? Does anyone have suggestions for the day, or recommendations of guides or tour companies they've used?

Sandi - this question will probably get more responses if you post it at www.CruiseCritic.com. The forums on that website are devoted entirely to cruising. Most people there will also advise you not to take the excursion(s) offered by the cruise company. You can save a lot of money by arranging your own trips - especially with a group your size! How young/old are the children? We did a Med cruise when our kids were 7, 9 & 11. We had a few days which we did FULL days, but only if the following day was a day at sea or we were able to rest. The kids did fine with that, but I think doing two or three days like that in a row would have killed us. THis year, we did a full day (started at 7am from our apartment in Rome) going to Pompeii and Positano on the Amalfi coast. REturned close to 8pm (had inclement weather and traffic which slowed us down). I think we would have been better just spending the time at Pompeii and Naples rather than traveling that far with the kids. My kids did really enjoy Pompeii and it makes me wish we'd gone to the museum in Naples.

I recommend taking the train (Circumvesuviana) from Naples to Pompeii, then if you all still have energy, take same train further south to Sorrento. We love both. I would skip Capri altogether. Alternatively, do the museum in Naples, then train to Pompeii and back to ship.

We spent a full day at Pompeii, and it was not enough.

Take the train to pompeii. It's absolutely amazing to walk around, it does take up at least a few hrs though. If you have enough time take the train to Sorrento. Sorrento is a beautiful little town to walk around. I was a little disappointed with Capri, probably because i had such high expectations.
