Pompeii

We will take an early train from Rome to Naples, stop for the museum (although I read here that seeing the museum after the site is better so might do it on the way back), then take the train from there to Herculean & Pompeii. Our next destination is Sorrento. I am a former archaeologist & lover of history. My feeling is that we should stay in Pompeii overnight & tour the ruins & Vesuvius the next day before moving on. Any advice? I understand the new town of Pompeii isn't much but does anyone know of a b&b there? Thanks..

Sorrento is much nicer with the town sitting right on the cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean. It's just a short ride on the little commuter train to the ruins. After exploring all day it's nice to come back and have a nice dinner and bottle of wine sitting outdoors looking at the sea. Of course just my opinion.

We did almost that, took a late trainfrom Rome to thetown ofPompeii and stayed overnight. Wewanted the whole next day at the ruins and ended up enjoying the town. Hotel Amleto worked very well. We had a fairly large room and bathroom On the front of the hotel and were glad that we had stayed there. It's been awhile so youmight want to check out the reviews on venere. We ate one night at a restaurant called Mimi's, dont eat there, not good. I'm sorry I can't remember the name of the restaurant that we ate at the second night, but it. Was recommended by the hotel. It was much more upscale and worth it.
We were very glad we had taken the whole day for the ruins. Havea great trip Mimi

We are going to stay in Pompeii for 3 nights in August and use that as our base while visiting that area. We are booked at Easy Bed Hostel.
It looks good on trip advisor and my communication with the owners has been prompt and courteous. They have a pool and and serve breakfast. They will also provide dinner if you want.

I visited Herculaneum, then Pompeii and finally the museum in Naples, in that order, each on a different day. I don't know that it makes so much difference seeing the museum first or last. If you want to see the museum and one of the archeological sites on the same day, you should start at the museum because , I think, it closes earlier. I stayed in Sorrento and day-tripped to all 3. Loved, loved Sorrento.

Ditto Chani! Stay in Sorrento, and take the train. Sorrento is just awesome! and eat at one of the lo-cost seafood restaurants down on the waterfront.

Pompeii can be done easily from Sorrento on a day trip and spend all day there. But Sorrento is definitely a better place to stay.
