Pompeii

If anyone is going to Pompeii, we hired a great tour guide... Gaetano's Pompeii Tours!

The advantage of having a tour guide is that Pompeii is a large place and takes a while to walk it. This tour that we took was customized to what we wanted to see, which greatly reduced the time that it would take had we done it on our own.

The other advantage of the tour, is that they picked us up from the airport before the tour, and dropped us off at our hotel after the tour which took a lot of stress on how to get to Pompeii with all of our luggage, and we did not have to worry about how to store our luggage when at the city.

We had a 4 year old with us and our tour guide was fantastic with her. It really made a difference. We were able to see many things as well as have things explained to us, it was really worth it.

My suggestion, if you are going to Pompeii, hire a tour guide to take you through it, but not any tour guide, hire Gaetano, he has been doing this for a long time and his discussion about the city comes from a realistic positive point of view.

He was the local guide for our Pompeii visit during our RS Southern Italy tour and he was fabulous. He brought Pompeii to life and knows how to keep keep his audience engaged as well as navigating around crowds to give you the best views.

I understand that there has been more excavations done recently. Did you go to any of the newer areas?

We didn’t because they are quite far from the center of the city and also because most of the time they are closed due to the Covid restrictions or lack of staff.

I am heading to Italy with my 82 year old mother this fall. Pompeii has always been a bucket list destination. Did you meet up with this guide in Naples? Where did you meet up with him? Because of my mother's age (she still gets around well, but 3 hours will be the most she can handle), We are staying in Rome, figure to take the train to Naples or wherever, then get in to Pompeii for a few hours, then head back to Rome for the evening.

His driver picked us up at the airport, but he was also willing to pick us up at the train station. Then the driver took us to Pompei and that is where we met up with him.

If you take the high speed train, you can get from Rome to Pompeii in about 2-3 hours depending on the train connections.

From there, you can be picked up from the train station and then he can do a 2 and 1/2 hour tour with you and recommend a place to eat lunch, then take you back to the train station.

If you would rather just take a train to Naples, I am sure he would pick you up there instead, he was very flexible with us.

Have a great time!
