We'll be on a road trip around Italy and Germany and although we haven't worked out all the details I would love to see Pompeii while I'm in Italy as I've never been to Italy before. We will have a car so was wondering where the best place is to stay if you've got a car.

Find a hotel that has parking and use the train to get to Pompeii.
We stayed in Sorrento and used the Circumvesuviana to get to Pompeii. Felt much better about leaving the car at the hotel's onsite lot than in a parking lot at Pompeii

How long is your entire trip? Only asking, as it is quite a long drive from Germany all the way down to Pompeii. Then there is the question of the large extra fees charged for renting a car in one country and returning at the end another. If you are using the car in Germany, you may want to return it, take the train or plane to Italy, and begin again with a rental car in Italy if you need one. In my opinion, If you take the train or a European airline to get to Rome from Germany , a car would not be necessary to get to Pompeii and the trip would be simpler as well to go by train.
