What is the best and most cost effective way to tour Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius from a home base of Sorrento? I know about the shared Mondo tours but then can't figure out how to then seamlessly get to Mt. Vesuvius without it being too late. We will take train from Sorrento to Pompeii.

For how many people?
I was just in the area this past May, and was amazed at the congestion, traffic, crowds, and the lack of efficient transportation modes, either public or private. You can pay the big bucks for private transfers, but you're still sitting in traffic and congestion. You can't get anywhere quickly. Be prepared for the train to Pompeii to be crowded, perhaps SRO, and hot, and running behind schedule. It took us an hour to get from Pompeii back to Sorrento, once we were actually on the train.
