Pompeii and Vesuvius in one day from Sorrento

Has anyone had experience visiting Pompeii and Vesuvius from Sorrento in a single day? Is this possible or would it be too much to cram in one day? If possible, would one see Vesuvius first and then Pompeii? Would the opposite order work better?

I did Vesuvius, Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day...but, I had a car so there was very little travel time between each site.

I would get to Pompeii right when it opens, 8:30am I think? The first wave of cruise excursions and Rome day trippers will get there a couple hours later. If you were to do just one other site that day, I would choose Herculaneum over hiking Vesuvius. But, that's just me

We did Sorrento and Pompeii in a day with ease. You might be pressed if you added Vesuvius, but it of course depends on how much time you want to spend in each. I found Pompeii fascinating, so I would not give that short shrift. I ascended Mt. Etna (another Volcano) and it's also an experience I wouldn't trade. If I had to eliminate one, it would be Sorrento, or have a quick look around. It's lovely, but not as unique as Pompeii and Vesuvius.

Hi James! I stayed in Sorrento and visited both Vesuvius and Pompeii in one day, in that order. It was a very full day and we were exhausted at the end, but it is doable. I thoroughly enjoyed Pompeii and wish I had a whole day (or 2!) to explore. I would recommend hiking Vesuvius then go to Pompeii and visit there. Safe travels and have fun!

Hi James,

You can definitely do Pompeii and Vesuvius in 1 day from Sorrento. I recommend doing Pompeii first in the morning. Then take the bus to Vesuvius. You will get a little dirty (you're hiking on dirt and our legs were covered afterwards). So that's why I recommend ending with that so you can go back to Sorrento afterwards. Plus I think it's nice to see the ruins of Pompeii and then climb the crater that did all the damage. Hope you have a wonderful trip! :-)
