Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast

Hello,
What is the best city to use as a home base for spending time on the Amalfi Coast and a day trip to Pompeii? We will be traveling in mid June of 2026. We may also go to Capri for a day or two.
Thanks

If both Capri and Pompeii are on your itinerary, then Sorrento is the more efficient hub. Although it is technically not ON the AC, there is ferry and bus service to the AC towns ( but all forms of road transportation on the AC are problematic due to high demand, crowding, lack of parking, and narrow roads which negatively impact accessibility). Salerno is another alternative, but will have longer transfer times to Capri.

Hopefully you’re not using a car to get around the coast. My suggestion would be to visit Pompeii on the way to the coast rather than settling in and then making your way back to Pompeii. I’ve been to the Coast 3 times and my recommendation would be to stay in Amalfi. You can drive there, garage your car and then use local transportation (bus, ferry, taxi) to explore the area. A lot of travelers want to stay in Positano which I did once. It is perhaps the prettiest village in the coast but it is expensive and extremely hilly. Amalfi is a transportation hub so it’s easier touring from there. I’ve stayed at Villa Annalara, a small family run hotel, and recommend it highly.

I haven't done it, but I would estimate 2 hours each way (bus + train) for Amalfi town to Pompeii. Maybe faster for a 125?Euro each way taxi.

There have been 2-3 other threads this week on this topic. They all have lots of interesting responses. They should be easy to find. I have recommended Salerno as best. You can click on my name to see my recent posts, which may help you narrow the search, if you don't find them by looking at the Italy section itself.
