We are planning day trips from Sorrento. If we start early could we do Naples in the morn and Pompeii in the afternoon. Or should we spend a day at each?
It depends on what you want to do in Naples. We stayed in Sorrento and went to Naples, arriving at the Archaeological Museum just as it opened at 10:00. That meant leaving Sorrento about 08:30 as I recall. After the museum we embarked on Rick Steves' Naples self-tour and arrived exhausted back at the station about 18:00. And we didn't even really have time to see everything on his tour.
If you only go to the museum, which has the Pompeii artifacts, that will take 90 minutes to 2 hours. You could then leave Naples and have time to see Pompeii the same day. But if you want to see more of Naples, you'll need at least a full day.
That's what I wanted to know......I wasn't sure how long the walk would take, museum, etc. I will go back to my 2 day plan. Do you recommend seeing Pompeii first, then the museum or vice versa?
I would see Pompeii first. All of the recovered items from Pompeii are in the museum so that probably would give better context. And watch for the secret room that once required permission from the Pope to enter.
I would also go to Pompeii first especially if going in the summer, that way you can avoid some of the heat as it can be unbearable especially mid afternoon.
Totally doable. You would be able to see it much better with a private guide.
Have a great trip!
