I am wondering if it is possible to see both the ruins at Pompeii and the archeology museum in one day as a day trip from Rome? It looks as if the museum stays open pretty late. Has anyone done this?
If you're restricted to one day, I would say combine the Naples Museum with Herculaneum, instead of Pompeii. Herculaneum is sort of Pompeii in miniature, and a very cool experience in its own right, and you can do it in three hours max.
Thank you both for the replies; I'll be in Rome for 10 days and had considered an overnight in Sorrento just for the purpose of seeing the museum, Pompeii, and Herculaneum - despite already having booked a Rome apartment. I may just leave it for a future trip to allow a more relaxed pace.
I would definitely go see Pompei. Stay in Sorrento and drop by Pompei. It's definitely worth going to and then relaxing away at a cafe in Sorrento or having lunch there.
Lori,
Consider Ostia Antica http://www.ostia-antica.org/indexes.htm about 40 minutes from Rome.
If you plan on starting out early and seeing Pompeii & the museum on the same day make sure you don't go on a Tuesday when the museum is closed.
