Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius from Rome Questions

Hello!
My husband and I have a few extra days in Rome after our 14 Day Best of Europe Tour (ending early July). We are quite interested in visiting Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius, and have figured out how to get to Pompeii by the train, but we're a little foggy on how to connect to Mount Vesuvius after/before touring Pompeii. I've seen some shuttle services from the train station, but frankly some of the online reviews are scaring us off a little-reports of unreliable, bad service, etc. Has anyone used any of these, and do you have any advice on whether or not it would be better to just book a Pompeii/Vesuvius bus tour from Rome. I know a bus tour would cost more (about $150 USD), but the train fares and admission fees aren't cheap either.
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

We used the Circumvesuviana to go from Vesuvius to Pompeii costs 2.50 euro. The Vesuvius stop is Ercolano Scavi.

edit : Not sure if you are getting off at Naples on the way from Rome and transferring to the Circumvesuviana.

When you get off and walk out the train station you will see other tourists lined up at the office to buy the combo ticket bus ride winding up hill and entry to the Vesuvius crater 20 euros roundtrip. That worked, there was no drama.

But we went there from Sorrento so $150 roundtrip from Rome including admission fees maybe would work for you.

Thanks for the reply, Jazz+Travels! Nice to know that the Mt Vesuvius shuttle worked out for you!
Yes, we would be traveling to Pompeii from Rome. I was thinking that the cost of train tickets and admission fees might cost almost as much as the bus tour from Rome.

Can anyone recommend a tour of Pompeii that includes the trip up Mt. Vesuvius (preferably from Rome)? We'd like the chance to see it as long as we're making the trip to Pompeii.
Thanks in advance for any assistance!
