Pompeii and Herculaneum

Hi. Can anyone recommend a tour from Naples to Pompeii and Herculaneum? I’ve seen many on GetYourGuide and Viator but just saw a more personalized and not as expensive one on withlocals.com. Thanks!

We did Pompeii and Herculaneum on our own. Just be away that Viator and GetYourGuide are 3rd party resellers. They sell other people's tour and then take a cut.

We did Herculaneum on our own - The Rick Steves guidebook points out interesting areas. I suggest a guide for Pompeii. If you do not have one booked in advance, The Pompeii excavation site offers guided tours in English. Just take the local train to go from one site to the other.

I was in Pompeii on 3/20. We booked a guide for Pompeii on AirBnB's experiences. The price was very reasonable and the reviews (over 4,400 total) were great. We met our guide at the gate in Pompeii, so it might not help you if you were looking for a guide to meet up with you in Naples. But the Circumvesuviana train from Naples to Pompeii was easy to navigate and cheap (but admittedly pretty crowded). I might consider a different option in the height of summer given the lack of A/C and the crowd, but the train was convenient and you get to see a bit of the bay along the way. Our guide Angelo was very knowledgeable. Our group was around 10 people total, so there was plenty of personal interaction. We had no need for earpieces and microphones like the mega tours I saw at other attractions.

We had an excellent experience with ASKOS Tours, which employs only degreed archeologists for its guides. I understand there are several other companies with similar staffing. Enjoy your trip!
