Pompeii and Herculaneum

We are in Amalfi now and plan to go to Pompeii and Herculaneum the next day or so.
Does anyone know if you can buy tickets with a credit card?

Thanks to you both for providing the info. I had also checked the official website and there is no mention of accepted forms of payment.

I have tried phoning several times - no answer. Very frustrating in this country to get basic information.

I find it odd that payment infornation in not on the website, but it's Italy. They don't make it easy here.

Very frustrating in this country to get basic information.

This is definitely true of the south where the tourism infrastructure is very rudimentary and underfunded - a true lost opportunity (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/12/opinion/severgnini-why-no-one-goes-to-naples.html). The site of Pompeii itself is neglected and needs more funding - see http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/14/arts/design/14pompeii.html. So if they can't keep up the site, the website is even lower priority. I went to Sicily last year and visited a world-class archeological museum in Siracusa. The ticket booth was a very basic little kiosk with cash only payments (and I had to worry about carrying small bills because I was afraid they wouldn't be able to make change). They had a very extensive visitor survey they were promoting at the museum exit - all in Italian. I would think that translating it to English would actually be useful since many (if not most) of the visitors were international but this is (southern) Italy. Don't expect bus websites or major attraction websites to have English translations either...yes, it was pretty sad, but I expect it. Luckily I can speak and understand Italian at that level.

Just bring cash just in case and don't worry about it.

Great explanation from Agnes. The solution is really very easy: just bring cash. We've found we've needed to use cash frequently in Italy - and not just the South - for everything from small purchases to restaurants and even accommodations which did not accept credit. You can't go wrong with a supply of euros at hand.

I just got back from Italy and spent a day in Pompeii. Yes, you can buy your tickets with a credit card. For an extra €2 they tell you you can get into a museum--could not find any museum! Don't pay the extra €2! Not only couldn't we find the museum, we were exhausted after our long and rewarding day.

I wonder if they are referring to the Naples Archaeological Museum ? ?

Can anyone recommend a day trip tour from Rome that includes both Pompeii and Herculaneum? We will be there in early December. Walks of Italy has a Pompeii/Amalfi Coast tour, but we want to skip the drive down the Almalfi Coast this time and focus on Pompeii and Herculaneum. Thanks!
