Hi! Wondering if advanced/timed tickets are needed for Pompeii and Archaeological Museum or can you do same day, walk-up tickets, including an English speaking, on-site guide for Pompeii. And regarding the guide, what has been your experience with the guides at Pompeii vs. booking with a private guide? Thank you!

I walked-up to both with the Campania card, without timed tickets, there was no wait at the museum and a few minutes wait in Pompeii. I used the an on-site guide, he was ok, not great. This was last year in late March or early April.
I rarely buy the museum passes because they don’t work for me, but the Campania card is worth it. Look into getting it.

We were there on 3/20. Our guide told us not to worry about the time on the ticket. The park was so quiet we probably could have waited to buy our tickets until the day of.
We booked our guide through AirBnB experiences. He was very good and much more affordable than what I was seeing on Viator. The tour had 4,000+ reviews, so I felt comfortable going with that one.

When is your trip? Can’t imagine ever needing to purchase in advance but seems I’ve read there will be changes coming to ticket/admission process

You can buy tickets ahead of time but all you save is standing in the ticket line. Pompeii announced they were capping ticket sales but the limit is something like 10K and will probably only come into a play a couple of days a year.
According to what I heard at the ticket window at Pompeii last year there are no official site offered guides, but there are plenty of people out offering their services. If you really want a guided tour I would arrange a recommended one before hand and let them tell you about tickets. Their price may include tickets or they may tell you to buy your own.
