Pompeii

Going on VFR trip in Nov. Want to visit Pompeii during free time. Do you recommend morning or afternoon? Any other suggestions?

It is a wonderful tour. And if you want to go to Pompeii, I would add another day in Rome as it is about 3 hours away from Rome. Well worth it though. You might check out Ostia antica during your free time in Rome.

I don't know your schedule but Pompeii is close to Naples, Salerno and Sorrento (30-45 minutes by train) and these are your best choices for close transport. Pompeii Scavi is the ruins and the best stop on the local train that may have a couple if Pompeii stops.

The thing that surprised me most about Pompeii was the sheer size of the ruins. You can easily spend on entire day and not see the entire site. If your time is limited make a plan about what you want to see most because you can wander aimlessly all day and just keep stumbling across amazing places - a Temple to Isis or a Theater or house with a mosaic floor - but that will quickly eat up hours.

Sunset is around 5:30pm for most of November in that area so keep that in mind for "afternoon" visits. According to their website 3:30pm is the last ticket and they start rounding people up at 5:00pm. Plan accordingly.

It's amazing - have a great time,

leveringtonvk, if this is the tour you're taking.....

....you have only two full days in Rome, which is very little for a city packed with fascinating things to see. According to the itinerary, both mornings are booked with guided tours so only the 2 afternoons are free unless you can add additional days to your trip. Is that something you can do?

Attempting to do Pompeii during one of those 2 free afternoons - in a month when daylight is limited - means sadly shorting Rome and missing much of the rest of region where Pompeii is located, if rushing there and back. Naples, Pompeii, the Sorrentine Peninsula/Amalfi Coast have enough to see and do to nearly fill a separate trip.

Also, with just afternoons to work with, escorted coach/vehicle tours from Rome are a no-go as they take nearly 3 hours both ways, most involve an entire day, and they depart in the mornings. You can get there quicker by fast train to Naples and then commuter train (Circumvesuviana) to the scavi but it'll still take nearly 2 hours to get there and the same to get back to Rome. According to the website, the excavation closes at 5:00 (17:00) during the winter months, and it covers a much, much larger area than most first-time visitors imagine it will. As your RS morning walking tour itineraries are rated "strenuous", you're looking at a punishing day on your feet at best.

In short, I wouldn't recommend this one unless you can add an additional FULL day to your trip. Alternately, the excavation at Ostia Antica is much closer to Rome, is smaller and can be more easily done if time is limited. Closed Mondays. Take a look?
