Take the train. It's fast, easy and cheap. No need for a car. Donna

If I read your post correctly, you are going to be in Positano with car, right? If so, suggest you take bus from there to Sorrento to Pompeii. Bus from Positano an hour and it leaves you off at the train station and from there only half hour to Pompeii, get off at I think is first Pompeii stop. Only half hour from Sorrento. Not sure how long it would take to drive from Positano to Pompeii. If you do this, coming back to Positano, get off at second Positano stop or you will have to take a local bus to town, a pain. LOVED Positano, we had best meal there ever in Italy. Enjoy.

It's important to get off the train at Pompeii "Scavi". There are 2 Pompeii stops and the Scavi is the one where the ruins are located. The other Pompeii is just in the middle of town.
