Our cruise ship will be disembarking around 6:00 in the morning at the Civit. Port and we are going to Rome for the next few days after that. Could we exit the ship that morning and head down to see Pompeii that afternoon and then head back to Rome. We really just want to see the ruins, look around, take a couple of pics and head to Rome
I will tell you how. Then you decide if you want to do it or not. From Civitavecchia station (about 1/2 mile from the port) you can catch a train. The train will take u to Roma termini (45 min and up, depending on train type). Once at Roma Termini (Rome main station), you take a high speed train to Naples. Journey time is 70 min from Rome Termini to Naples Centrale. Once at Naples Centrale station you go downstairs to the Circumvesuviana commuter train station. You will be taking a train to Sorrento, but you will get off a little earlier than Sorrento, at Pompei Scavi station. The Pompeii excavations are a 5 min walk from the station. The train journey from Naples to Pompei Scavi is about 40 min. So from Civitavecchia to Pompei is altogether at least 3 hours. The last high speed train from Naples back to Rome departs at 7:30pm, therefore you should depart from Pompei by 6:30pm at the very latest.
