Hi
We will be touring Pompeii after getting off train from Rome. Is there a way to purchase tickets online before we go?
Thanks
Please clarify: Are you taking a day trip from Rome to Pompeii, arriving at the Pompeii train station? And the tickets you're referring to -- are those train tickets, or are they tickets to enter the Pompeii Scavi?
We would be arriving by train to Pompeii and would need tickets to visit the site. Not sure how to go about buying them online or if I should. We would be visiting on a Friday in June. I have seen tickets for Pompeii and 2 other places included in a 3 pack ticket. We only have a few hours. Should we just stick with Pompeii or try to do the other places nearby?
The Circumvesuviana commuter train will drop you at Pompeii Scavi which is almost directly at the ticket counter. Only a few hours?? There's enough to see in Pompeii to spend at least a half day.
Tim is spot on: with just a few hours, you only have time for Pompei. The site is much, much larger than you probably expect it'll be. We spent 5 hours there (and that was my 2nd time) and didn't cover it all. Advance tickets through June look to be available here although i'm not sure you really need to purchase ahead of time.
Ignore the text about the site choosing best seats: that's generic stuff for venues which have seating. Adult tickets for the excavations only - not the Vesuvian Archaeological Circuit - are currently € 15.00 +€ 1.50 fee but could be higher if there's a special exhibit on the date you'll be visiting.
Thanks for all the replies. If I buy tickets online can we just enter the site or do we still have to stand in a line to pick up a reserved ticket? I have heard so many different things about this. We are stopping here between Rome and the Almafi Coast so I want to use our time wisely. Thanks again

Arg. Wish I had a definitive answer for you there but best I can do is refer you to this and hope a recent visitor can confirm:

Ticket prices are right so maybe the rest of the info is pretty accurate too. Fingers crossed! Looks like you have to exchange advance tickets for a paper ticket, and you can only do that at the Porta Marina entrance, which is the main entrance very near the Circumvesuviana (train) Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri station. The site I linked notes that there is a fast lane for this exchange. Then again, what with tourist crowds increasing every season, it's possible some new ticketing procedures might arise this year, just as they have for some other top Italian attractions.
Speaking of the Circumvesuviana....

There is no direct train from Rome to this particular station: you have to change trains in Naples to the cheap Circumvesuviana commuter train or seasonal, limited-run Campania Express. Apologies if you already knew that but worth mention just in case! :O)
Thank you everyone for all the info. I can’t wait to visit !
We were there in July two years ago and we just walked up and bought them. We also paid to be part of a tour which I would highly recommend. We spent about 4 hours there.
Just seconding the advice that the "scavi" archaeological zone is much bigger than you'd imagine. Pompeii was an entire city, remember!
We were just there this week: There is a separate line for those who have "online tickets" and it's shorter than the regular line. If you have the Arte Card for the Campagnia region, you will also use the online tickets counter. And yes, you do have to show your voucher, or Arte Card and get a specific Pompeii ticket that they will scan as you go in.
